In the last couple of days, the rate of new COVID-19 cases has been declining slowly, but at a noticeable rate. The lockdown 4 restrictions have thus far yielded good results in combatting the third wave and Makhura states that Gauteng is close to its peak.
Gauteng citizens have been more compliant with the lockdown regulations which is certainly aiding in the slow decline of new cases. This will however not bring immediate benefits and will not yet lighten the hospital load. There are still an alarming number of new hospital admissions daily.
The graph below is by Ridhwaan Suliman, a senior researcher at CSIR. It shows the comparison between all three waves as of the 8th of July 2021.

New deaths in Gauteng are still rising rapidly proving that the third wave is the most devastating wave.
