Over the past week as of the 13th June 2021, the decrease of COVID-19 new cases and deaths around the world has continued.

This amounts to over 2.6 million new cases, a decrease of 12% and 72 000 new deaths, a decrease of 2%.

In the last week the lowest case incidence since February 2021 globally has been reported, even though the number of cases now exceeds the 175 million mark.

  • A decline in new cases has been reported in all regions, except for the Africa Region. (See chart below).
  • A marked decline in the number of new cases has been reported in the South-East Asia, European and Western Pacific compared with the previous week.
  • The Region of the Americas and the Eastern Mediterranean Region has reported similar numbers as per the previous week.
  • A decline in the number of new deaths has declined in all regions except for the African and the South-East Asia Regions.

COVID-19 new deaths still remain high with more than 10 000 deaths per day. There is a sign that those countries affected the most with the pandemic is starting to slow down. With the global mortality rate is still declining for a sixth consecutive week, there is still a struggle to obtain vaccines for many countries across the WHO Regions, the healthcare systems are overburdened and struggling and the SARS CoV-2 variants continue to spread.

Countries with the highest new cases over the past week:

  • India: 630 650 – 31% decrease
  • Brazil: 454 710 new cases – similar to last week
  • Argentina: 177 693 new cases – 17% decrease
  • United States of America: 105 019 new cases – 6% increase
  • Colombia: 176 661 new cases – similar to last week
