What is the medworxCOPPA?

medworx COPPA (medworx’ Coalition of Private-Sector Practitioners of Africa) is an entirely voluntary freedom-of-choice non-aligned coalition of like-minded medical professionals

An open consortium of colleagues who share the freedom to exercise medical ethics and moral integrity embedded in the Hippocratic Philosophy alongside the universal medical professional principles that dictate best-practice skills in the delivery of holistic clinical excellence.

How does COPPA Interact with Medical Aids and other Health Insurers?

Inherent in the COPPA process is the aim at working with healthcare funders in the construction and provision of peer-reviewed, quality medical care of chronic disease based on an affordable, non-adversarial and sustainable process by means of independent professional ownership of clinical skills and acumen in medical care

What is the medworxCOPPA PreP initiative in South Africa?

A Medical Practitioner Fee-for-Service initiative across the continent that offers private practitioners access to affordable medworx Pre-HIV Exposure Prophylaxis (PreP) on behalf of their patients

What’s in it for the Practitioner?

• Enhances the practice footprint and reputation
• Increased income with minimal effort – most of the work can be delegated to the practice nurse

• Freedom from medical aid, insured health funding constraints, dictates & tiresome paperwork

• To permit Practitioners who generally do not treat HIV/AIDS cases to offer PreP at no additional cost or learning requirements through doctor-to-doctor Clinical Co-management

• Coalition membership carries no fees and no commitment
• Patient profile, number of patients & fees entirely at your discretion

• Open to all registered Medical Practitioners in Private Sector Practice
• Fees to patient is entirely at your discretion

 The Coalition is an open and fully transparent consortium of medical colleagues

• No perverse incentives

• No membership fee
• No contributions other than your clinical acumen & professional ethics
• No Medical Aid or Health Insurance interference, constraints or dictates
• No “kick-backs”
• No referral fees
• No fee-sharing; no profit-sharing; no case number targets
• Each participant determines his own fees, fee structure and bills his client – participant fee data is stored by way of a stringent confidentiality agreement

How is my patient data and confidentiality protected?

All data (inc identifiers) of the participating practitioner, his/her patient details, case notes, investigative and treatment is secured in a dedicated password-protected Chinese-walled silo allocated to each participant

What More Do I Need to Know About medworxCOPPA?

COPPA is NOT a conventional GP Group System that sells its services based on a conventional “Bargaining Council” platform

COPPA is NOT a medical aid

COPPA is NOT a short-term health benefits insurer

COPPA is NOT an insurer

What kind of Members am I going to be associated with & how do Members interact?

Members:

• conduct their practice as individuals based on their own practice management models
• have complete freedom to associate with and receive income from any other medical funding structures (e.g. as preferred and/or, capitated fee providers to medical funders)
• Members enjoy the freedom of combining services they have committed to health funders while –

• Enjoying additional revenue through COPPA membership (details in Membership Application)
• Access to enhance medical care through doctor-to-Doctor clinical co-management
• Total freedom of association, free of obligation to accept COPPA referrals

What about The Bad Guys in our Profession?

How can Members be sure that COPPA membership is not contaminated by bent pins, bad apples, unsavoury scoundrels and other medical scallywags with evil intent?

 Applicants submit:

• A short CV with reference contact details
• A fully transparent verification process that covers validity of qualifications, good standing with the relevant Health/Medical Council, etc.
• Letters of Reference from Colleagues
• If necessary, and with the written consent of the Applicant Member, a letter of opinion will be requested from an existing COPPA Member working within the same discipline and medical milieu

 What Protocol will be applied to medworxCOPPA PreP?

• Dr Eric Hefer (click on About Us on our website) is a well-known pioneer in the HIV/AIDS arena in South Africa  and is responsible for the accreditation of medworx as an accredited MCO
• Dr Irfana Arbee has specialist qualifications in HIV/AIDS (click on About Us on our website)
• Dr Jack van Niftrik is a Member of the Faculty of the Foundation for Professional Development (FPD) since 1999 and has authored several manuals on HIV/AIDS for the FPD
• Stringent international-standard PreP Protocols
• WHO, HIV Clinicians Society of SA, SA Dept. of Health Guidelines up-to-date modifications as when pertinent

Who are best-suited medworxCOPPA Participants in the curbing HIV infection and re-infection through PreP?

These include, but not limited to:

• General Practitioners
• Gynaecologists and Obstetricians
• Paediatricians

• NGOs and NPOs who have access to the services of a Medical Practitioner
• Registered/bona fide providers (NGO’s etc.) in the field of HIV/AIDS, health & welfare of indigent populations are welcome to submit a request to participate – if valid, COPPA will seek provision of a part-time doctor (unless such is already installed in the Organisation)
