Over the past week as of the 23rd May 2021, the decrease of COVID-19 new cases and deaths around the world has continued.
This amounts to 4.1 million new cases, a decrease of 14% and 84 000 new deaths, a decrease of 2%.
- The largest decline has been reported in the European Region and South-East Asia (see chart below).
- The Americas, Eastern Mediterranean, African and Western Pacific Regions reported similar of new cases compared with the previous week.
- The largest increase in deaths has been reported by the Western Pacific Region.
- Other Regions reported similar or decreased numbers to the week prior.
COVID-19 Deaths and new cases still remain high throughout the world, despite the declining trend over the last month.
Countries with the highest new cases over the past week:
- India: 1 846 055 – 23% decrease
- Brazil: 451 424 new cases – 3% decrease
- Argentina: 13 046 new cases – 41% increase
- United States of America: 188 410 new cases – 20% decrease
- Colombia: 107 590 new cases – 7% decrease
