It has been 434 days since President Cyril Ramaphosa put South Africa into its first severe lockdown, this originally was to be for 21 days with heavy lockdown 5 restrictions and COVID-19 protocols.
South Africa is now in going into its third wave with upping the lockdown level from 1 back up to alert level 2 with adapted restrictions, as per the Presidential Address given on 30th May 2021.
The updated restrictions include the below as of the 31st May 2021:
- Curfew will now be from 23h00 to 04h00. Restaurants, bars and the like, as well as gyms will need to close at 22h00 to allow for their staff to get home before curfew starts.
- Funerals are restricted to 100 people with a 2 hour service limit and no night vigils or post funeral gatherings permitted.
- Gatherings may not exceed 100 people indoors and 250 people outdoors. Should a venue not have this capacity, it must not exceed 50% of the venue capacity.
- Health protocols must be observed at gatherings including the 1.5 m distance between people.
- Alcohol sales remain unchanged.
As the global statistics tell us the numbers are decreasing for both new cases and deaths, some countries are still experiencing increased numbers sending them into the next wave.
Keep wearing your mask, sanitise and keep socially distant from those around you in order to take South Africa out of the third wave and keep the numbers decreasing thereafter.
