Current Lockdown Level 2 may not be adequate to control the rising COVID-19 numbers in Gauteng

Acting Health Minister Mmamoloko Kubayi-Ngubane and Premier David Makhuru have raised concerns that the level 2 lockdown may not be adequate in combatting

South Africa’s third wave of the COVID-19 Infection.

Being the most densely populated province in South Africa with the highest rate of new COVID-19 cases, the Gauteng Government has asked national structures to review extraordinary measure which may lead to adjusted lockdown level 3. Should Gauteng go into a harder lockdown, the rest of the provinces are sure to follow to ensure the country’s full protection.

There will be economic consequences in a shift to level 3 regulations an adjusted capacity will be required to maintain the economy.

The delay in the vaccine roll-out may be a factor currently responsible for the increase in COVID-19 cases.

To date 1 750 000 South Africans have been vaccinated, mostly with the Pfizer vaccine.  2 000 000 Johnson & Johnson vaccines are unfortunately now being declared unusable due to cross-contamination with a different product.

This impacted on the mitigation of third wave COVID infections.

It is stated that next month over 40’s may be able to register for vaccination. However, stock constraints may result in delays.
