Global COVID-19 Status as New Cases and Deaths Decrease as of the 20th June 2021

Over the past week as of the 20th June 2021, the decrease of COVID-19 new cases and deaths around the world has continued.

This amounts to over 2.5 million new cases, a decrease of 6% and 64 000 new deaths, a decrease of 12%.

In the last week the world is continuing to experience the lower and lower case incidence, with last week now being the lowest case incidence since February 2021, even though the number of cases now exceeds the 177 million mark.

  • A decline in new cases has been reported in all regions, except for the Africa Region. (See chart below).
  • A decline in the number of new cases has been reported in the South-East Asia and European compared with the previous week.
  • The Americas and the Western Pacific Regions have reported similar numbers as per the previous week.
  • A marked increase of new cases has been reported in the African Region compared to the previous week.
  • All regions, except for the Eastern Mediterranean and African Regions have reported a decrease in new deaths in the past week.

COVID-19 new deaths still remain high with more than 9 000 deaths per day.

Countries with the highest new cases over the past week:

  • Brazil: 505 344 new cases – 11% increase (taking over from India for the first time in weeks)
  • India: 441 976 – 30% decrease
  • Colombia: 193 907 new cases – 10% decrease
  • Argentina: 149 673 new cases – 16% decrease
  • Russian Federation 108 139 new cases – 31% increase

Global Variants presence:

  • Alpha Variant – reported in 170 countries, territories or areas (hereafter countries; seven new countries in the past week)
  • Beta Variant – reported in 119 countries (four new countries)
  • Gamma Variant – reported in 71 countries (three new countries)
  • Delta reported in 85 countries (six new countries)
